At the time of his death, Dr. V. Chris Lakhan (July 8, 1951 - June 12, 2018) was a Professor Emeritus at the University
of Windsor, Windsor, Ontario, Canada. He retired as a Full Professor on December 31, 2016 after a 32 year career in academics. He was a Life Fellow of the International Biographical
Association, Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society, a Certified Geographical Information Systems Professional, a Certified Environmental Inspector, a Certified Environmental Specialist, and
Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Indo Caribbean Research. He held certificates from the Bloomsbury Educational Board, London, Ministry of Education, Guyana, and the University of London, England.
His degrees are from the University of Guyana, University of Windsor (1975),
and the University of Toronto (1982). To pursue his studies, he obtained a
Canadian Government Commonwealth Scholarship, a University of Windsor
scholarship, and Open Fellowships from the University of Toronto for
four consecutive years. He has won numerous awards for academic
distinction including the John Bartholomew of Scotland Geography Prize,
and the Guyana Independence Award for Academic Excellence.
Dr. Lakhan is a former Professor in the Earth
and Environmental Sciences Department at the University of Windsor.
During his long academic career he specialized in the development of computer simulation
models, and the use of geographical information
systems (GIS) and remote sensing (RS) techniques
to study and predict the dynamics at work in coastal
and other natural environmental systems. Most of
his models and techniques (GIS and RS) were applied to the study and
management of environmental and natural resources.
Professor
Lakhan taught courses in resources
management, environmental impact assessment,
geographical information systems,
and remote sensing. As a Professor, he won numerous
Teaching Merit Awards. He won teaching awards from both
the Faculty of Social Science and the Faculty of Science. During his
teaching career, he supervised, co-read and examined more
than 100 undergraduate and graduate theses.
Dr.
Lakhan has an extensive publication record in books, and national and
international journals. He authored several monographs
and
books, with
three for Elsevier Science Publishers, The Netherlands. He
has
also published more than 60 conference and refereed papers;
many in international journals, among them Computers and Geosciences,
Journal of Statistical Computation and Simulation, Mathematical
Geology, Environmental Software, Environmental Geology, Coastal
Management, Ocean and Coastal Management, Journal of Coastal Research,
Earth Surface Processes and Landforms, Geografiska Annaler,
Environmental Management, Journal of Great Lakes Research, Journal of
the Waterway, Port, Coastal and Ocean Division, Coastal
Engineering, and the International Journal of Soil and Sediment
Contamination. In addition to his books and journal publications, he
contributed numerous presentations to newspapers, and to
international conferences. He also contributed
articles to the Encyclopedia of Coastal Science.
Dr.
Lakhan served his profession as a member of several international
societies among them the Coastal Education Research Foundation, the
Environmental Assessment Association, Royal Geographical Society, the
International Institute of Informatics and Systemics, Ontario
Association of Remote Sensing, and the Urban and Regional
Information Systems Association. He was also a Director and Certified
Environmental Consultant to businesses and organizations on
environmental sustainability, computer simulation and technological
applications. He also served on the Editorial Advisory Board of Open
Ocean Engineering Journal.
